Meet Jeff!

We are thrilled to welcome Jeff Strekas, our new winemaker, to the Record Family Wines team! Jeff has an impressive background, both in and outside of the wine industry. He has a love for blending, which we are excited to have him lead us through at the upcoming Blendning Experience. We still have a few seats left, so grab your tickets to this unique event today!

We conducted a quick Q&A with Jeff for our Spring Wine Club Newsletter so our members could get to know him better. We hope you enjoy learning more about Jeff and get the chance to meet him soon!

Favorite part of your job? In no particular order: talking about/teaching about wine, making a consumable product with my hands, working on my coopering skills (barrel repair), being out in the vineyard, cleaning the cellar floors and drains (no, seriously), forklifting, climbing barrel stacks, and of course tasting!

Favorite wine and food pairing? Dry German Riesling and sushi

What are your hobbies? Wine, whisky, IPAs, reading (a mix of non-fiction and cheesy fantasy), music (mostly classic rock and hard-rock), and Crossfit/Weightlifting

Favorite books?  American Gods by Neil Gaimen and The Art of War by Sun Tzu (good luck reconciling those two things)

Favorite places to visit?  There's too much fun stuff out there to keep going back to the same places!  The most memorable trips I've had would be visiting Egypt, Tanzania (climbing to the top of Mt Kilimanjaro), Taiwan, Australia (Tasmania is criminally under-rated), and Tulum Mexico.

Anything else you would like to share? I'm a firm believer in Stapp's Law (the human aptitude for ineptitude is so great that it makes even the smallest accomplishment a minor miracle) and Hanlon's Razor (Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity).

Introducing the 2015 Meltdown

Last year, we decided to change things up a bit when discussing the blend for Randy's Red. Traditionally, it is a blend of Syrah and Grenache, however in 2015 we had some Mourvedre to add to it and wanted to do something different! The first Blending Seminar was the perfect setting to experiment!

We divided our guests into seven different teams. Once team names and been determined and the process explained, we let each team conduct their own blending trials.

Once each team had come up with their favorite blend of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre, we turned it over to a panel of professionals to narrow it down to the top three blends. Our experts were looking for wines that were well balanced, and most importantly, delicious!

At the conclusion of the blending seminar, the top three blends were revealed. We then let all of our guests blind taste the finalists and determine the overall winner. The winning blend ended up consisting of: 55% Mourvedre, 33% Syrah, and 12% Grenache.

We are thrilled to introduce the winning blend as the Meltdown. As the back label says: Meltdown is an appropriate wine to enjoy when you have reached your emotional limit and need a break from reality. This wine will help you avoid, or at the very least navigate through, any meltdown in your future!

Stock up on this unique blend before it is sold out! Want to have the opportunity to experiment with your own blend? Join us at the vineyard on Saturday, April 14th for our second Blending Experience. This year, each guest will get to take home a bottle of their teams unique blend! Limited number of tickets available here.

Introducing the 2016 Viognier

With summer right around the corner, it's time to stock up on wine to pair with warm evenings, BBQ's with friends and fireworks! Look no further than our 2016 Viognier. We harvested the grapes earlier than we typically do to ensure we achieved a crisp, refreshing wine.

The resulting wine is fresh with notes of honey and pear on the nose. On the palate, stone fruit is prevalent with great minerality and enough acid to make this a perfect wine to sip on it's own or enjoy with your favorite summer meal!

We only bottled 86 cases of this spectacular wine and it is going fast! Place your order now to make sure you don't miss out on the perfect summer wine!

Working Hard and Having Fun!

Our first blending seminar was a wild success! We would like to thank the 39 participants that competed to create the best belnd of our 2016 Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre. Spring is usually a gorgeous time in the vineyard, and the weekend of the Blending Seminar was no exception!

Guests arrived at 3:00pm to start with the serious part of the event - creating the ultimate GSM blend! We separated the attendees into smaller groups, about six people per table, and let them take it from there. First we had the participants come up with a team name and get familiar with the individual wines they would be working with. After names were selected and they knew what they were working with, the teams got down to blending.

Once each team had come up with their favorite blend, we had our Vineyard Manager, Mindy, Assistant Winemaker, Vince, and neighbor and fellow Winemaker, Leon Tackitt, taste through the six blends to narrow it down to three finalists.

While we were working on narrowing the field down, guests were able to take a short vineyard tour ending at our VIP tasting area where they sampled our 2016 Viognier and enjoyed a selection of cheese and other bites from Le Vigne.

Gathered back at the shop, the event concluded with dinner provided by Hurricane Kitchen, dessert by Clementine's Cupcakes, and entertainment by Chris Beland. Throughout the evening, guests were able to taste the three final blends and vote on which was their favorite. We tabulated the votes and finally declared a winner!

The winning blend was from the team The BabyMakers and consisited of 55% Mourvedre, 33% Syrah, and 12% Grenache. We are anxious to bottle this wine and release it next year!

In an attempt to make Record Family Wines a truely family friendly experience, we secured two babysitters to take care of children of attendees throughout the blending portion of the event. When it was over, kids were welcome to join the group for vineyard tours, dinner, and entertainment! We sure are glad we added this option because the winning team had seven young children between them!

Thanks again to everyone that joined us for a beautiful weekend at the vineyard. We hope you had as much fun as we did!

Blending Seminar: What to Expect

Each year, we get together to create two different blends: Randy's Red and Genesis. This year, we are inviting our loyal supporters to get involved! That is where our Blending Seminar comes in. We hope you will join us on Saturday, April 29th to contribute to the process! Curious about what to expect... read on!

We know that the word "seminar" can have an intimidating connotation. Imagine this as more of a blending party! You will be lead by our Vineyard Manager, Mindy, and Brand Manager, Tricia, through the entire process. First, the group will be divided into teams. It just wouldn't be a Record event without a little competition...

After teams are formed, we will cover the equipment to be used during the blending process and give an overview of the wines we will be using for the blend. Then it gets really fun! Using trial and error, each group will come up with thier ideal blend using our 2015 Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre. When each group has acheived the perfect combination of the three wines, the blending process has been completed!

Tricia and Mindy will narrow down the blend to three finalists while attedees are taking a break. Before dinner is served, vineyard tours will be available and cheese platters served along with our 2016 Viognier to refresh guests palates. The group will reconvene for dinner, and taste the final blends. Attendees will vote on their favorite blend and a winner will be announced!

We will be bottling the winning blend at the end of May for a Fall release. Participants of the blending seminar will have the first opportunity to purchase the unique blend. The wine will be officially released in the Fall and is sure to be a fan favorite! Limited seats still available, purchase tickets today!
