Each year, we get together to create two different blends: Randy's Red and Genesis. This year, we are inviting our loyal supporters to get involved! That is where our Blending Seminar comes in. We hope you will join us on Saturday, April 29th to contribute to the process! Curious about what to expect... read on!
We know that the word "seminar" can have an intimidating connotation. Imagine this as more of a blending party! You will be lead by our Vineyard Manager, Mindy, and Brand Manager, Tricia, through the entire process. First, the group will be divided into teams. It just wouldn't be a Record event without a little competition...
After teams are formed, we will cover the equipment to be used during the blending process and give an overview of the wines we will be using for the blend. Then it gets really fun! Using trial and error, each group will come up with thier ideal blend using our 2015 Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre. When each group has acheived the perfect combination of the three wines, the blending process has been completed!
Tricia and Mindy will narrow down the blend to three finalists while attedees are taking a break. Before dinner is served, vineyard tours will be available and cheese platters served along with our 2016 Viognier to refresh guests palates. The group will reconvene for dinner, and taste the final blends. Attendees will vote on their favorite blend and a winner will be announced!
We will be bottling the winning blend at the end of May for a Fall release. Participants of the blending seminar will have the first opportunity to purchase the unique blend. The wine will be officially released in the Fall and is sure to be a fan favorite! Limited seats still available, purchase tickets today!
We might turn to our consulting winemaker, Eric, for the bulk of our winemaking processes, but when it comes to blending, we like to take over! Eric does a fantastic job every year, getting each varietal to reach it's full potential in barrel. That's the hard part. When the time comes to finalize the blends to create the finished product, whether it be Randy's Red or Genesis, we give him a break and take it from there.

Blending is truely a family affair. We schedule a time to all be together (not as easy as it sounds!), pick up some barrel samples, and get to work. It is a challenge we like to take on as a team, a delicate balance between fruit and tannins, personalities and palates, to find the perfect blend.

We started with our first vintage, the 2009 Randy's Red, and have refined our process from there. We pull out tons of glasses, measuring cups, gratuated cylinders, calculators, pens and paper and get down to business. The 2012 vintage was a turning point for us when we dismissed traditional blends and decided to take a risk with our inagural release of Genesis. We decided to go back to where it all started when we purchased the vineyard in 2007 and blend the three varietals that were planted when we took over, Merlot, Syrah, and Grenache. The resulting wine is fun, unique, and most importantly, delicious!

We took it a step further and shared the blend with the entire Record family during a Thanksgiving gathering before it was bottled, to come up with a name. It was such a special moment to share the future of Record Family Wines with close family and get their input and ideas. Aunt Nanci gets credit for naming our Genesis blend and we couldn't be happier with everything about it!

We are so proud of our award winning red wines, but when we saw the weather forecast last month for an event we were attending, we realized we had an opportunity to showcase another wine while pouring at Sunset’s SAVOR the Central Coast.

Grenache Rosé Sangria
1 bottle Record Family Wines Grenache Rosé
1/2 cup fresh strawberries, sliced
Juice of 1 lemon
6 basil leaves cut into 1 inch stripes
3 tablespoons simple syrup
2 cups club soda
Combine strawberries, lemon juice, basil, and simple syrup. Refrigerate for 1 hour, up to 8 hours. Add Grenache Rosé and club soda. Invite some friends over, get comfortable outside, and enjoy the last of these warm summer days!
We are preparing to bottle our 2012 wines and this time, we will have a new wine to reveal! We will be creating a special blend of the original three varieties that were planted to the vineyard when we purchased it in 2007: Merlot, Syrah, and Grenache. The result is a fun, fruity, blend that will pair perfectly with simple, everyday dishes like pasta and BBQ.
Last weekend, the Record Family came together for our annual Thanksgiving celebration. After enjoying an amazing spread of delicious dishes, we pulled out some barrel samples of the 2012 wines and created the blend. Everyone had a chance to give us feedback and even contribute to the conversation about what to name this special blend.

Tomorrow is Halloween, so it is officially time to start thinking about one of my favorite holidays – Thanksgiving! I love this holiday for so many reasons: the traditions, spending time with family, the food… And in the Record Family, we take our food seriously!
Several years ago, the “kids” decided to give the “parents” a break and take over preparing food for our annual Thanksgiving feast. Just another way we are transitioning traditions through the generations of our family! It is always fun to try new dishes along with savoring traditional sides. It seems that we all have our favorites to make (mine are mashed potatoes!) but we can’t ignore the importance of the main dish – the turkey! Here are a few of my favorite recipes that we have used the last few years, none will disappoint!
1) Clinton Kelly’s Lemon Sage Turkey
I found this recipe a couple of years ago and decided it would be the one I used when preparing my first Thanksgiving turkey! The recipe does not call for a brine, but after extensive conversations with Mindy, I decided to do one anyway. The flavors of this turkey are incredible! The citrus and sage combination was delicious. Just don’t skimp on the compound butter!
2) The Pioneer Woman Roasted Thanksgiving Turkey
If you are looking for a simple turkey that delivers a ton of classic flavors, this is the recipe for you! The Pioneer Woman recommends using a brine so be sure you are prepared to start the night before. Beyond that, this turkey does not take much work, which will give you plenty of time to focus on those delicious side dishes! The turkey is a gorgeous shade of brown and juicy when roasted to perfection!
3) Roast Turkey with Black Truffle Butter
While I can’t vouch for this recipe yet, I can’t wait to try it! I love anything with truffle flavor so I can only imagine what this would add to my Thanksgiving plate! The recipe looks a little more complicated in that you need to make a garlic confit, but if you are up for a challenge I suggest this recipe for a potentially big flavor payoff!
When choosing wine to pair with our Thanksgiving meal, I love the versatility of our 2012 Grenache Rosé and look forward to seeing how our newest release, the 2011 Randy’s Red stands up to some of the bolder Thanksgiving flavors.

In April, we had a production crew from the Cooking Channel show Man Fire Food out to the vineyard to show them how we cook with fire! Over the course of two days, the crew documented the history of our Deep Pit BBQ tradition, the preparation of the meat, the cooking process, and the final feast. The Paso Robles CAB Collective is made up of a group of 20 wineries producing spectacular wines from Bordeaux varietals. We currently just make Merlot, but will soon have over 30 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon in production to add to our line up of limited production wines. In the meantime, we are thrilled to be part of this group and excited about the wines that are being showcased!
This year, the CABs of Distinction Gala is taking place at the beautiful River Oaks Hot Springs in Paso Robles. In addition to tasting the best wines from 20 top Paso producers, there will also be a VIP lounge area, CAB Bistro featuring food from several of our favorite local restaurants, music, and more.
